The Wizard of Oz at Dreamingincolor

When I decided to open a store in Historic Murfreesboro, I had know idea how much everything just fell in place.

Let me explain.
I firmly believe that things happen for a reason and everyone is on a journey.
For me it has everything to do with God.
So all the hard times, all the different jobs, all the people good and bad, are there to teach you what you need to get to the next step.

When I drove by this beautiful home, I did not have a plan to open up a store. I always wanted to but never found the right place.
Then there were signs....

.....not just the sign in the ground......things that made me feel like this was right.

One of those things was The Wizard of Oz!!
That is how I came up with the idea of The Wizard of Oz at Dreamingincolor!

Let me explain......

My daughter has always loved the Wizard of Oz. She started collecting things when she was young. She even dressed up like Dorothy and had a Wizard of Oz birthday. People said she resembled Judy Garland.

Did you know Judy Garland is connected to Murfreesboro, TN?

Her relatives are from here. The Gumms. Frank Gumm was her dad.
He lived right here on this street! He grew up down the street on East Main and later moved to Maney. Her uncle lived in Oaklands Mansion which is right down the road from the store!

There were many other signs.

My trip to Italy helped too. I met a wonderful couple from New Hampshire. We had so many laughs together and still keep in touch today. She told me of a wonderful thing she did for her historical society to raise funds. She sold scarecrow heads for the town to put in their yards. I told her I must have one.

Jackie was sweet enough to send me one. Little did I know I would have a store to display it in. You see, Dreamingincolor was not a store yet or even an idea.
See what I mean about people in your life?

I made a few more by copying what she sent me so I could get my display going.

I bought the garments from goodwill and with a little DIY Dorothy and Scarecrow were born.

So this fall I decorated Dreamingincolor inside and out in a Wizard of Oz theme. I didn't have time to do all the characters but incorporated a few with some fun eye candy throughout.

I even managed to make two tin men. This one I gave a tutorial on how to create it for halloween and this one below I made with an old bread box! If you look real close you will see his heart.

I would love for you to make a trip to the store and take a look. The rest of this post is for the ones that can't make it.
And remember there is a plan for everyone.
Pay attention to the journey. It may take your over the rainbow!

Thanks for reading.

Hi Deneen,
I love it when dreams come true and especially for someone as lovely and kind as you! The Wizard of Oz theme is fantastic and I love your creations. Maybe someday my travels will bring me to your store. In the meantime I'll keep clicking my heels to see!

There are so many "truisms" in that book/movie. What a great theme to have! So glad you are successful and happy!

Deneen, I love this so much! I am a huge WOO fan. Wish I could come over and enjoy it all. I'll try clicking my heels. I bet your sweet little Dorothy is smiling ear to ear. Thanks for sharing all the info about Judy G. and her family. I'm glad you saw the signs and followed your heart. And please tell me that your daughter's Dorothy costume is packed away somewhere- I hope she still loves it as much as she did when she was little.

I love the Wizard of Oz and dressed up as Dorothy a couple years ago for a school event. Great theme!

I'm a flying monkey fan. Nothing quite like them, or maybe that's just because they made a big impression on me when I was 5.

It has been fun to watch your dreams come true Deneen. I wish I had known a few weeks ago that your shop was in Murfreesboro. Just a few weeks ago we actually drove through town purposely in an attempt to touch base with the daughter of some of our friends who lives there. I definitely would've come by your shop! We will be back, especially now that we are living in The Upcountry, and I will definitely pay your shop a visit.
Love the Wizard of Oz decor.
Blessings,
Patti
