Roll Top desk without the Roll

Yes I was crazy! What was I thinking?

This has to be one of my biggest transformations to date. I even questioned myself for buying this monster! I thought it was a project gone bad but the woman informed me her husband painted it camouflage for his office!!! OK I won't even go there....

To top it off, as I was taking the drawers out to load it in my car, a mouse ran out of it EEEKKKK!!!

NOTE TO SELF: Always remove drawers before taking a piece into the house!

When I brought it home I honestly thought to myself "AM I CRAZY!" "THIS IS TRASH!"

But it was sturdy and I loved the little cubbies. It had some hidden potential.

Unfortunately he spray painted over latex so the paint had to be scraped off. Most of it peeled away because the two don't mix!

It was quite a job!

My wrist still hurts!

I wanted it to have a two toned look. So I painted the inside gray.

I added metal numbers to the cubbies. I just love the cubbies! AND We all love numbers on things. There were the perfect amount of spaces ,seven , like 7 days in a week.

I immediately took off the ugly handles and put on some beautiful knobs. I painted the outside black.

On the file drawers I changed the handles and painted the new ones gold to match the ones above.

Sorry for the blurred pic!
I am totally surprised how much better it looks. Once again proving how much you can change a piece with paint, knobs and a little creativity.

Remember the BEFORE

This is the AFTER!

Let me know what you think.
Now I have to clean up my floors!

Would you have taken on this project?

  7. I'm not sure I would take on a project this big,but it now looks beautiful.
If it's going to your booth, it will sell right away.

  8. This is a very inspiring project, which is why I like your site so much. I would probably tackle a similar project but wouldn't have considered how much the numbers add to the character. Great touch!

  10. I love the rustic country look and my cabinets are gray with white behind and withered to look old... so I love the look you gave the desk. I too love the cubbies and numbers you added and the knobs are adorable. Yes I would tackle something like that and glad you did to inspire us!

    1. Who doesn't like cubbies and numbers? I knew when I saw the desk that was what I would do. Funny that is the only reason I bought the ugly thing LOL! It was a lot of work but the satisfaction outweighed the piece!

  14. I think the desk looks great!!!I love roll top desks, I had one at my very first job with an old typewriter (oops! I am not really that old)which was in a law office - my boss was an old geezer and loved antiques. The place looked more like an antique shop not a law office. At any rate - I love it!!and if I had the chance to get it now, yes I would definitely refinish it and paint it.
