Utensil Drawer Organizer




I am really excited about this project. Anytime you can do something for free that excites me! If it excites you go over to the sidebar on this page and press that FOLLOW button! I love looking for new ideas to show you!

I have been collecting paint sticks from Home Depot and Lowes for awhile because in my crazy mind I figured I can make something with them...... and.... well..... they are free!

As I was putting the forks and spoons back in the drawer the light bulb went off in my head. I really hate the plastic organizer I have in the drawer separating all the utensils.



What if I use the paint sticks and make my own dividers?

I started out with these.....






I drew up a plan of how I wanted this to be laid out in the drawer and measured and marked each stick. With a handsaw I cut to size. I didn't want it to be permanently attached to the drawer so I can clean the bottom if it gets dirty. So I made it to come out. I cut the pieces and glued each one.





I lined the drawer with shelving paper. This is a clear non-stick roll of a rubber liner.




After measuring and cutting the liner to fit, I placed the paint stick form into the drawer. Now it looks custom and did I mention it was FREE!!!!

I loved this project! I think I will do the rest of the drawers too! I even got more space out of it to store even more!!!  And I think I will continue saving the sticks! I have some more ides for them!

    Love this idea! Our L's and HD have been stingy lately with the stir sticks- I have to actually ask for one when I get paint now! Guess I'll have to ask for a couple at a time. So, what kind of glue did you use? did you clamp or anything?

    Went to get the stirs and they were too flimsy. Looked down and saw yard sticks for 69 cents. They were thicker and gave some character with the inch markers. Bought four, could have gotten by with three - cost? About $2.10. Pretty cool.

    Nice job! I've been thinking about doing this (hadn't thought of using stir sticks!). What glue did you use to put it all together?

    As a Home Depot paint associate, what you need to understand is that the sticks are not free just for the taking. They are for customers who are buying paint. To put it into perspective, a box of one gallon sticks cost the store $80.00 and a box of 5-gallon sticks cost the store $178.80.
    The reason that the prices of paint keep going up. To cover the cost of your so called "free" sticks. Remember this the next time you come to the desk wanting 20-30 paint sticks for the project you saw on pintrest. We are considering charging for the extra sticks that you want. Just a heads up.

    Ferg I should make it clear that I do buy paint when I get my sticks. I don't get 20 or 30 I get 2. I paint furniture so I wind up with a lot. People should never abuse anything. Thanks for the response.

    Thanks for understanding this. You would not believe the requests that I get from people asking for such amounts of sticks. I've even had people want a whole box of sticks. I don't mind the occasional 2-3. It's when we get people coming to the desk and stating that they read on pintrest that we give out free sticks. Then I explain to them that they are not free, and they are for customers buying paint. We've even ran out of sticks because of people wanting them for their craft projects.

    This is a great idea. But I have my Safety Managers hat on this morning and I note that you have the knives (sharp pointy things) at the left hand side of the drawer. If you're left handed this is OK, but if you're right handed tyhen move them to the right hand side of the drawer.
    Much easier and safer to use if they are on the side of the drawer which your hand is the natural one to use.
    Great idea about the paint sticks, I can use this for something I'm sure. Well done!
