Apple Cake

This time of year always brings me back in time.

A time growing up in the north with all the beautiful trees turning colors. Hometown football games and family get togethers. We use to go to the pumpkin patch where they made cinnamon donuts and pressed harvested apples for homemade apple cider. The smell of apples and cinnamon in the air was to die for. Funny how smells are so relevant to memories.
I also remember going on one of my dad's famous mystery rides to a farm one year where we purchased bushels of McIntosh apples. My mom baked apple pies, apple fritters, apple crumb, baked apples and whatever else she could come up with. We never got sick of them.

So the first cool day of the year, I wanted to do something with apples. Bring back those wonderful aromas and memories. Apple cake sounded perfect.

I love this made from scratch cake. I used McIntosh Apples of course!
This apple cake will be great all season. I have attached the recipe for you to try.
Warning: this is a very rich cake but you will love it.

Be sure to pin the recipe to keep for later!

The Wizard of Oz at Dreamingincolor

When I decided to open a store in Historic Murfreesboro, I had know idea how much everything just fell in place.

Let me explain.
I firmly believe that things happen for a reason and everyone is on a journey.
For me it has everything to do with God.
So all the hard times, all the different jobs, all the people good and bad, are there to teach you what you need to get to the next step.

When I drove by this beautiful home, I did not have a plan to open up a store. I always wanted to but never found the right place.
Then there were signs....

.....not just the sign in the ground......things that made me feel like this was right.

One of those things was The Wizard of Oz!!
That is how I came up with the idea of The Wizard of Oz at Dreamingincolor!

Let me explain......

Outdoor Fall Decor on a Budget

Fall is upon us!!

I am so excited since this is my favorite time of year. I have been decorating my home and the store and I have realized that........
IT IS EXPENSIVE!!

That is why I did some things different this year. I did my outdoor fall decor on a budget. I love what is out in the stores but I also love putting my spin on things. After all, I am a DIY'er!

So I went to Old Time Pottery and got some great things. I created some fun easy projects for my outdoor fall decor that I think anyone can do. So head on over to the Old Time Pottery blog to see how to make some of my ideas for your own home.

I love sharing inexpensive ideas with each of you. I hope you enjoy it!

Layered Patina Painted Hutch

I am really excited to show you another layered technique I have done. This time I used 7 different paint colors. I paint furniture like I paint canvas. One of the things I like to do when I paint, is study my subject. So I decided to start studying patinas.

I have started a Patina Pinterest board. From texture to colors and chippiness will get pinned there.

I used the same technique for the layered patina painted hutch as I did for my french end tables. The difference is the amount of colors and type of paint. I used Annie Sloan for the end tables and my new paint Country Chic for this hutch.

I started with my signature color paint Dreamingincolor. That is the base color that start the layered patina painted hutch.

Italian Carved Chair {Country Chic Paint}

If you have been around here long, you know I love French and Italian furniture. All the curves and carvings are perfect! It is a furniture painters candy.

When I came across this Italian carved chair my first thought was, "I am keeping this for myself!"
Unfortunately, it did not go in my living room and I didn't want to touch the perfect upholstery.

I knew exactly how I wanted to paint it. I used my layering technique. It is the same technique I used on this dresser.

I wanted the Italian carved chair to show all of its lovely details. Needless-to-say, I fell in love with it all over again. What do you think?

It took only two colors to achieve this look.

Tin Man Candy Dispenser

The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favorite movies.

Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Glinda and the Wicked Witch. Who can forget? We become attached to all the characters in the film. (Well most of them anyway). These characters also make the best costumes for Halloween.  I wanted to take a little bit further with this original idea! Now is the time to head to Old Time Pottery to get your fall and Halloween supplies.

With the help of Old Time Pottery, I found some inexpensive supplies and made a Halloween Tin Man candy dispenser! This is better than the typical bowl. This is interactive! Head over there and check out how to do it!
