Word of the Year

One of my favorite things to decorate with are photo frames. I love creating with layers and texture. Frames give a lot of alternatives. Of course I like to use them in different ways. Pictures are great but I also like using them to frame different decor.

The New Year has started and I wanted to do an inspiration wall. I came up with a word for the year and incorporated it in my design. I started with one of my oval frames I got at Dreamingincolor store.

The word I came up with for my inspiration for the year is FLY.
FLY like in soar, travel, take off in business etc.
The definition is to move in or pass through the air with wings
To rise in or be carried through the air by the wind
So this is how I came up with my ideas.

The first frame I used was a Laura Ashley frame. I remove the glass and backing. Only using the ornate frame I nailed it to the wall. I had this butterfly pin and added it to the middle. I love the meaning of the butterfly. Endurance, hope, change, life
It has wings for flight

The next one I used was a pretty turquoise frame. Keeping with the theme, I choose a nest that I also got at Dreamingincolor store. Again I removed the glass. This time I added a layer to the oval frame.

The eggs represent the birth of this idea. Representing birds, flight.....fly

The last frame I used was another Laura Ashley frame. I used the whole frame this time. I even used the paper insert because it was so pretty.

I printed my word of the year "FLY" and pasted it over the words on the paper.

I added my travel sign to the wall. I love the way it came out!!!

The accessories worked too and added to my travel inspiration. I had a book on Italy. The framed picture on the painted dresser was from when I was in Florence. One of my Dreamingincolor signs about travel was added too. This is definitely a wall of inspiration. I cannot wait to see what this year has to offer. I think my photo frames worked perfectly. It is something I will look at everyday.

Succulent Terrarium

Memorial Day is this weekend and people will be gathered with friends and families. Lots of BBQ and decorating happening. All to celebrate our soldiers that fought and died for our country.

All the more to do something in honor of this celebration. Last year I created buntings with material I found at Old Time Pottery for the porch. This year, I had an idea to create something that can be used way after the weekend is over.

A Patriotic Succulent Terrarium.

I created this with some Old Time Pottery supplies. You can too! It is something you can all year long.

Head over to Old Time Pottery for complete instructions.

Happy Memorial Day!

Easy Metal Flower Frames {tutorial}

With Christmas six months away yes I said it gift making is on the brain. Some things can be used anytime of the year. Picture frames are always popular.. I have done a few here on my blog like my pine cone Shabby Chic picture frames.

While on a trip to the dollar store I came across colorful metal flower hooks. I thought they would be cute if I painted them. Remember chalk paint goes on virtually everything! Then I could hang these in my wannabe craft room!

When I took them home a light bulb went off. I love the hand cut metal flowers that adorn picture frames, but they are a lot of work. What if I could use these? They needed to be changed up a bit though.

First thing to go was the middle piece. Cut with a wire cuter.

Next cut off the back hook. You will need some muscle for this one!

The flower will look like this. I did a pink and yellow one. Remember you can paint any color you want!

Now they look boring like this so I fluffed up the petals by bending them forward.

Here is one of the yellow ones. I love that the flowers look like the old Italian chandelier I repainted!

Grab a canvas. Rip off the canvas and you have a wooden frame. A great idea in itself! Many possibilities. You can find them cheap at bargain stores. They are all wood. Add some paint!

Now to attach the flower. I found these really cool concrete nails. They will become the stamen.

Hammer on to the corner of the frame or wherever you see fit.

Attach eye hooks to the inside of frame on either side. Twist wire through to hang photos on.

Or you can just use it as a frame. Either way it is a cute gift for any occasion.

Can you think of other ways these can be used?

Shabby Chic picture Frames

I had a wonderful weekend enjoying the beauty of fall. The trees are turning and winter will soon peek its little head out. Christmas is in the stores before we can even "Give Thanks" at Thanksgiving! To me there is one little thing that says fall all over it.

Pinecones! They dress up mantles and get filled in vases. Some even get painted.

Mine got cut! Many many pieces of pine cones.

I recently purchased some antique frames that I painted and distressed. I added some pine cone flowers to decorate the corner. I think these will make a great gift. For Christmas maybe I will tie a red velvet ribbon around the frame to hang it from.

I painted some old frames in old white and waxed and distressed them

I added flower pine cones to the frames

I even made some small ones to go with the large one
Frames are always a great gift. This just has that little somethin'

I think it is a great project to do for Christmas but any time will do! A gift for any occasion!
