Layering Paint on a Dresser

Have I told you that I am having the time of my life?

My plan when the children got older was to be able to get back to my creative side. I have always been creative but I mean doing it for me. On my time, and what I love to do.

I have been blessed with people that like what I do so I have been able to make a living from it too.

I do all sorts of things from design work to painting on canvas. Of course I have this blog and I paint furniture too. Now I have the store that goes by the same name. You can follow on facebook and instagram.

My favorite part of painting furniture is being able to use my art in my painting. It puts my signature on it. I am able to truly offer a one-of-a-kind custom piece to all my customers.

I get to experiment and screw up in the process too. It's all good because that is how you learn what is right for you.

Last week I layered paint on this dresser and loved it! I have layered paint before when I painted a drum table and  china cabinet. This technique was different. It allowed me to change things up which I love to do.

There are all sorts of people with different tastes. So to have other techniques in painting helps with the customers.

This piece is so sturdy.

I love the detailing on it also. I painted it with three colors. Blue, yellow and white. It is heavily distressed also.

It came with these wooden knobs that I decided to keep. I dry brushed it to make it look like the paint is wearing off of it. I only changed out the top two drawers with some fluer de les knobs.

I dry brushed over the top so the details show. Don't you love these?

I have been painting like crazy. Today I hurt my back......getting old stinks! I wind up being somewhat of a contortionist when I paint. That plus a rainy day and I am taking Motrin tonight!

It is going to be beautiful tomorrow so I am hoping to enjoy the sunshine.

I will be starting my living room soon YAY! I found out today that my couch will be delivered soon. I cannot wait!

In the meantime I have lots to keep me busy!

More drawers to paint and legs to distress!

and things to get ready for customers .......and things to sell!

But I love what I do! I am so glad you are here and I can share it with you. Thank you! I really appreciate all my readers!

So this is it! My new layered dresser. Hope you like it!

This was the before....

It's just great. I love the colour combination. Today is my day off. I have some tables standing in the garage, waiting to be finished and two tables I have to start with. Couldn't sleep last night and was wondering which treatment I would give them. You've given me an idea now. Thanks for the inspiration. Pascale

Very nice Deneen! You are excellent with the dry brushing technique! I have a lot to learn.

I love the style and lines on your dresser. When I first looked at the dresser I was hesitant but the more I looked I realized how comfy I was with the idea of such a neat technique.
I'm fairly new to the extreme distressing but getting used to it and learning to appreciate it. Nothing bad against any bloggers that use this technique, it's just me adjusting to new ideas.
I have noticed that people here don't seem to like the distressed look at all, even a little bitty. (here is about 15 miles or so west of Grand Junction, CO) It's also very hard to find affordable furniture pieces to redo. The thrift stores here have gone crazy with their prices, like what you'd have to pay at an antique store. Somebody told them about bloggers making money off repurposed/redone furniture I guess. Total bummer. Enjoy your blog very much. Happy Weekend

Thant is why it is so important to do several techniques when painting. Always have something for everyone! It is very popular here. So glad you enjoy the blog! I look forward to your comments! Thrift stores are crazy anymore!!

When you layer paints do you paint a complete layer of each color, then sand to show the color, or do you just paint a little accent of each color with a dry brush?

Can you please tell me the colors you used? I am repainting an old metal gym locker, actually 4 old gym lockers and I love the colors here. It will go perfect in my boy's mudroom. I have 4 boy's and I don't. wanna do a blue. Thanks!

Hey there! I was reading this blog and wondered the same about the colors used here. I love the way this looks! Amazing how it transformed! I saw you asked about the colors used but didn't see a reply. Do you know what colors were used and which was applied first? Is so, would you please let me know. I find it hard to decide on color!

I really love how a piece of furniture looks with layers of paint on it. That's one of my favorite things to do, and my little girls enjoy it too! Good luck with the sales!

I would love to invite you to share this with us at our new Sweet Inspiration Party which is live every Friday, http://sweethings.net/sweet-inspiration-link-party1/

Have a wonderful week!

The chest of drawers looks gorgeous! I enjoy layering paint and then distressing it, too. I'm about to start working on a book case for one of my guest rooms. Thanks for the tips. Pinned and Tweeted. Thanks for partying at Snickerdoodle Sunday. Hope to see you at this week's party.

I love this dresser! I can't seem to perfect this look. Do you use chalk type paint or milk paint?

Gorgeous. I have a client who wants this look on her cabinets, but also has an interior door that she wants to look aged similarly but it's not wood-its just fiberglass. Do you think if I take care to prime it, I could create this look on it as well? I would so much love to hear your thoughts or advice. Thank you so much!

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

Thanks. I use Chalk

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

Not sure. I got this look because I was able to use the qood color to accent age.

Still haven't seen an answer to what kind of chalk paint and colors.

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

Tammy the colors are mentioned above. To be specific you can match any of hese with any paint. I use Country Chic but I have used others too and got the same effect. Country Chic Elegance, Creme Brulee and Simplicity will work

Unknown said...

Chalk paint will work on any surface. Just primer first and use a good quality primer.

It's funny how you said you couldn't sleep thinking of what you're going to do. I haven't had a full night sleep since i began working on my project. I want to create this layered look but I just have a single uniform color made by blending colors. I can't seem to figure out how to layer colors

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

make sure paint is dry when you apply next coat

I love this piece you have done, i have an old dresser and have decided to try it.today i painted it with an off white, then ostrich feather and tomorrow am doing duck egg blue. Then I'm sanding it back and it has carved inlays so doing those with brown wax, can't wait. It's my first time at layering, cheers

It seems to happen to all the painting bloggers. It won't be long until someone slams you for not giving them explicit directions on how to get to your finished result. I think your work is beautiful. Don't let them get to you. It's a joy just to be able to be inspired from you sharing your work.

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

Susan! Thank you! Glad to inspire someone to create!

I live in Spain and my friend and I are buying small items of furniture to do up and sell on from thrift (charity) shops and have noticed the huge increase in their prices too.
Trouble is no-one wins in the end. Not the people who NEED to shop in the charity shops - as they are too expensive.
Not us - they are getting too expensive (therefore not enough profit).
AND: Not the charity shops - sales will go down as they are - you guessed it - too expensive!
Such a shame.

Unknown said...

This is just so beautiful! I see that you mentioned to let the paint dry before you apply the next color. Do you distress before you put a layer another color or do you distress after all your layers have been painted on? Thank you!
