Painted Hutch Before and After

Well I finally got it done after all the decisions I made back and forth on what I wanted to do. If you remember I posted this picture of the hutch before I started.

I got this hutch for nothing. I was going to put it upstairs but it was too heavy to climb all those stairs so it settled in the entryway. The walls are painted gray and the color of this wood just didn't work. I thought I would have to paint the walls but I like it now after the paint job on the hutch. It took me a while to decide if I wanted black or red. Since I have a few black pieces already I tried the red.

From the moment I started painting I knew I chose the right color for me! I did a little each day till I was satisfied with it. The color is Red Delicious. After the front was painted I made the decision to change the color of the back and paint the shelves red. I painted the background Evening Hush. I love the way it turned out.

I only changed the nobs to a clear crystal. It adds the right amount of light to the piece.
After I painted it I stained it with a walnut stain. I still have to put a wax coat on.

Ok so Leave me a comment and let me know what you think? Much better than before? I think so! Now I have to fill it! Pictures will post tomorrow!

Very nice! It makes me think of how we used to paint things red with streaks of black to simulate a cherry finish. This is much prettier!

This turned out really well! Deciding to paint only the shelves and to darken the back was a good idea. Love what you have in it too. :)

Did you have to sand it before you painted it?

Cathy said...

Hi,
Absolutely fabulous!!! Wow!!!
You mention the two paint colours you used but not the company or gloss? Also what stain? You also mentioned you put wax on it. Why do you prefer wax to poly?
Once again great job! Love the two colours together and the After picture....Wow!!! (again.)

The paint was Glidden and the stain was Minwax. Wax gives it a great finish and I feel it is less mess. Thank you so much for you comment!

What sheen of paint did you start with? Was it flat or eggshell or?

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

eggshell

I am new to this painting thing and I love the way your hutch turned out! Just wondering if you had to sand your veneer on the hutch and how much prep you had to do on it. Maybe yours is solid wood, mine is fake wood and some of it has chipped off. What advice do you have for me? Thanks

Deneen@dreaming-n-color said...

Ryan I sanded the top sheen off for this piece before I painted with the latex. Have you ever tried Annie Sloan paint? No sanding required. You might want to try that.

Thanks, I will look into that!
