Wine Corkscrew Wall Art

If you ask me to do a guest post for you, I'm most likely going to say "yes", depending on your time frame.  I'm also going to browse your blog, learn as much about you as I can and then do a project that I think somehow relates to you.  I might also talk about alcohol (unless you specifically tell me not to).

When Deneen asked me to do a guest post, it was pretty easy because I was lucky enough to meet her last July when I was in Tennessee.  She was delightful and we had a marvelous time.  I knew that she was a fabulous furniture painter.  I knew that she loved all things Italian.  I knew that she was going to Italy soon.  
I decided to make a piece of wall art for this guest post that incorporated those facts.  I chose a wine corkscrew silhouette project.

I traced an outline onto a piece of cardboard with the intention of cutting it out of a piece of wood.  Now I am not a DIY, power tool-wielding, Ryobi-loving woman like Deneen.  Nope, in fact, power tools kind of scare me, but my father-in law has a little shop and he's pretty darn good with power tools, so I gave the cardboard template to him and he cut out a wooden wine corkscrew shape for me.

Because Deneen is one of the furniture painters that I admire, I knew I was going to have to paint this piece.  I was not going to use just any paint....I was going to use the "One-Step Paint" by Amy Howard that we found in a shop window when we were shopping together in Franklin, Tennessee.  I was also going to use some Miss Mustard Seed furniture wax to give this piece a smooth, protective finish.

The beauty of the "One-Step Paint" is that you do not need to sand, prime or strip wood before using it and it dries really fast.  I chose black, and it is a true black, which apparently is sometimes hard to find in this type of paint.  So...paint, wax, stir stick, brush and a soft cloth to buff the wax and I was ready to go.

  Oh, can you guess what I used for that soft cloth? 

 Shoulder pads that I cut out from some shirt.  I have no use for shoulder pads...I have the broad shoulders of a football player...always have.

I gave that corkscrew a couple of coats of the black paint.  

The paint can says to let it dry about 30 minutes in between the two coats.  Lets have a yummy Italian drink while we wait.  (Deneen is probably having one..shouldn't we?)  I'm a pretty big fan of Caravella Limoncello.  It's imported from Italy.  I like to have it with some domestic Sprite Zero.

Let's be all civil and put it in a glass!

 My paint is dry now, I'd better get back to it.  Time to wax with Miss Mustard Seed furniture wax.  I put it on with a chip brush.

Guess what?  You need to let it sit for a bit before you buff it out and you know what that means....another Italian drink.  Let's look at a fine Italian wine shall we? 

This is Mia Dolcea Moscato d'Asti.  It's yummy.  It's imported from Italy.  It's the perfect drink to have when you are feeling sorry for yourself because you are not the one in Italy...or while you are waiting for your wax to be ready for buffing.

Or should I say "cin cin"?  (Which is pronounced "tcheen tcheen" and actually has more to do with the sound two glasses make when you touch them together like in a toast.) 

Well, my wax is ready to be buffed out which is really just kind of rubbing it in until it's smooth and even.   Now all I need to do is put a hanger on the back of it.  My favorite hanger is a pop can tab, bent slightly outward and stuck on with some hot glue.  Too easy!

This project is finished and ready to hang above my bar.
